Part 1 - Molasses and fish On September 10, 2013, approximately 1,400 tons (233,000 gallons) of unprocessed molasses accidentally spilled from a Matson cargo ship into Honolulu Harbor. The spread of the unprocessed molasses was in all directions since the water in Honolulu Harbor was calm. This stochastic event caused dissolved oxygen (DO) to decrease and low DO (less than 4.00 mg/1) in water resulted in a fish kill of greater than 4,000 fish in a relatively short amount of time. Normal DO (greater than 4.00 mg/1) levels returned within a week as the molasses naturally diffused or consumed by marine life. These observations were conducted by state researchers, who started performing water tests the day after the molasses spill. All testing ended on September 18, 2003, when DO concentrations returned to normal conditions. 1.
