Ambiguity in survey questions is a frequent problem. The researcher knows what the question is asking, but sometimes it is not clear to the respondent. Consider the following question, which appeared on a retail sale's gun application form: "Are you a nonimmigrant alien?" Despite appearances, the question is not asking about the applicant's planetary status but rather refers to foreigners traveling or studying in the United States who retain a residence in another country.

It is easy to slip jargon or language into a question that the researcher understands but the respondent does not. Marketing terms such as cognitive dissonance, attribute evaluation, evoked set, and information search are understood by marketing experts, but may not be understood by the individual who is taking the survey.

Certain words may not be clear, because they are interpreted differently by respondents. "Where did you eat dinner last night?" may seem fairly straightforward. Yet the word dinner is problematic, because in the South "dinner" often refers to the noon meal while Northerners consider "dinner" to be the evening meal.
