Part A: Develop legal and ethical initiatives

For this part of the task you will identify two initiatives to assist a community services organisation to meet its legal and ethical requirements and peapre a n email report to two people.

Information about the organisation is in the box below:

The community services organisation for this assessment is a young persons' 'drop-in' Centre known as Youth in Front. The centre provides services for young people from 12 to 18 years old. Programs include:

  • Computer and internet access
  • Support to obtain information about youth issues, services, education and jobs
  • Research facilities for homework assignments
  • Training in job ready and life skills
  • Referrals to services including health, drug and alcohol, sexual health, mental health
  • Drama, music, dance, arts and crafts
  • Recreational activities
  • Sports activities

Clients are young people at risk and are referred through schools, mental health and disability services and other health and allied health services. Clients may also self-refer.

A recent audit has identified that many of the legal and ethical responsibilities of the organisation are not well documented. It will be your job to contribute to putting some procedures in place to address this.

1.Identify two initiatives that would help Youth in Front to meet its legal and ethical requirements.

You may choose any types of initiative for this task. Some examples include such things as:

A checklist to help make sure that a specific legislative requirement has been covered

A record-keeping work practice to protect privacy of client information

A training program for staff to provide ongoing professional development in legal and ethical responsibilities

A workflow procedures/chart that documents legislative requirements for staff

A communication protocol for use with clients and carers or family to meet legal and ethical requirements

A consent form for young people entering the service

A customer service charter advising clients of their rights and responsibilities.

A safety procedure

Note: You do not need to actually develop the initiatives - you just need to develop the ideas.

2.Now you need to develop an email report to two people who would be willing to provide you with verbal feedback on your initiatives. These people should have an awareness of legal and ethical requirements in the workplace. These could be such people as:

your class colleagues,

work colleagues,

supervisor,

teachers,

people in the workplace who are known to you.

Friends or family who are aware of legal and ethical requirements in the workplace.

Your email must be written in a professional manner and must include the following information:

A full description of each initiative - provide sufficient information so that the reader of the email can understand exactly what you are proposing.

The reasons you are suggesting these initiatives for Youth in Front, including the legal and ethical requirements

How each initiative will help staff to meet legal and ethical requirements

The specific legislation to this area of work and potential breaches of legislation or ethical requirements if the initiative is not put in place

Ask for feedback on the initiatives (You will need to discuss the contents of your email with each recipient for Part B of this assessment).

You can write your email report in dot point form if you wish. You may attach documents to your email if you need to.

Send your email to the two identified people.

Part B - Receive and act on feedback

1.Organise a time to discuss your email and suggestions with the two people you sent it to. You may discuss with them either together, or individually. The discussions may be face to face, online, or by telephone. At least one of the people should take on the role of a supervisor at 'Youth in Front'.

2.You will need to talk about the following in your meeting:

Why you think each work practice can be improved and how this will assist in meeting legal and/or ethical requirements.

Each suggestion for improvement.

How your improvement will fit in with the specific legislation involved.

Take notes during the meeting/s so that you can write the report in (4) below.

Ask both people for feedback on your initiatives. Ask them:

If they think your suggestions are a good idea.

If there are other things that need to be thought about.

If they can suggest any improvements to your suggestions.

If they can provide you with any advice about how to implement each initiative.

3.After your meetings, write short report that provides details about the discussions. Include each of the dot points above in your report. Use the following template to complete this part of the assessment.
