Part A1: Thermal Reaction of Ammonium Thiocyanate and Barium Hydroxide Octahydrate

a. Record the initial, during and final observations for the thermal reaction between ammonium thiocyanate and barium hydroxide octahydrate.

b. Identify the type of thermal process (exothermic or endothermic) that occurs during the chemical reaction between ammonium thiocyanate and barium hydroxide octahydrate. Be sure to provide experimental evidence to support your answer.

c. What gas was produced in the reaction?

lab experiment:

Part A1: Thermal Reaction of Ammonium Thiocyanate and Barium Hydroxide Octahydrate

1. Approximately 4.0 g of ammonium thiocyanate salt is measured into a plastic weigh boat on a top-loading balance. The salt is then transferred to a clean, dry 150 mL beaker. Record the initial appearance of the salt in the space provided on your lab report sheets.\

2. Approximately 8.5 g of barium hydroxide octahydrate salt is measured into a plastic weigh boat on a top-loading balance. Record the initial appearance of the salt in the space provided on your lab report sheets.

3. The barium hydroxide octahydrate salt is added to the 150 mL beaker containing the ammonium thiocyanate salt. 4. In the fume hood, the beaker is placed on top of a wetted wooden block and the salt mixture is then stirred with a glass stir rod.

5. Record any changes that are observed during mixing. Also, after the reaction has gone occurred, note any odour produced by fanning the vapours towards your nose.

6. Record all your observations in the appropriate section in the laboratory report sheets.
