You have been appointed Chief Warden at the new 4 star hotel on the waterfront.
As part of your duties you need to develop emergency evacuation procedures in case of fire.
You will have to conduct a thorough research on how to develop an emergency evacuation procedure and plan for your hotel.
Provide a brief introduction to explain what information you will look for and why. You have been provided with a floor plan of the ground floor of the hotel to start with. (Please ask your Trainer/Assessor to provide you with the floor plan document)
Management will be reviewing your procedures before you can move on to the other floors. You are required to submit a report detailing the emergency evacuation procedures to management.
In the report you must include the following criteria:
AN INTRODUCTION TO YOUR EMERGENCY PROCEDURE PLAN AND PROVISIONS
- Identify the relevant legislation which outlines the WHS requirements for Evacuation and Emergency Procedures
- Provide an overview of the key responsibilities and duties which are covered by the chief Warden to comply with:
- Providing Information
- Monitoring work practices
- Consultation processes
- Hazard identification and control
- Training
- Record keeping
- Review processes
EVACUATION PROCEDURES FOR THE 1ST FLOOR
A suggestion is students may use the Hotel Floor Plan map provided. (Appendix 2)
Key provisions to discuss:
- Identify exit points
- Identify assembly points outside the building
- Determine correct flow of traffic to nearest exit and assembly point
- Include traffic from stairs down from upper floors
- Identify warden stations for directing traffic
STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR WARDENS AND COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR EVACUATIONS
- Allocate job roles
- Allocate stations
- Determine SOPs for handling traffic
- Determine SOPs for handling an emergency report from a guest e.g. fire (identifying hazard, assessing and controlling risks)
- Determine SOPs for checking for remaining guests
- Describe communication lines and provisions for consultation
- Measures necessary to maintain security of the building
- Determine SOPs for maintenance and service of safety and security equipment
ORGANISE TRAINING
- Identify training needs
- Regularity of evacuation drills (identifying hazard, assessing and controlling risks)
- Necessary training for wardens
- KPIs for reviewing evacuation drill success
REPORTING REQUIREMENTS
- Determine what reports and documentation must be kept (electronic format to minimise or reduce wastage)
- Determine who must be reported to
- Include necessary steps for liaising with Emergency Services personnel before, during and after an emergency
