PART C- Project Management (35 pts) Answer all questions in Part C based on the following case: About Coffee, a corner store chain catering to consumers that are interested in a variety of coffee brands, household coffee equipment and foods accompanying coffee (such as sandwiches or cookies), has just purchased retail land in SE Calgary with plans to open their new store. COFFEE You are Director of Projects for About Coffee, and you will be presenting your project plan for construction of this store to the company President and the project team. Assume that today's date is March 4th, 2024. With the land already purchased and detailed drawings complete, the first step of the project would be obtaining local building permits. Once the building permits were received, recruitment for the store's management team could begin, and temporary fencing could be setup along with clearing the site. With the site cleared, the store foundation could then be completed, which would then be followed by erecting the building exterior. Once the exterior is completed, parking lot construction could commence at the same time as the interior of the store is being completed. Once the management team is finalized, they can begin recruiting their employees for the eventual store opening. The installation of shelving, signage, and checkouts could not commence until a building safety inspection is completed to ensure exterior and interior construction has met provincial regulations. Once the parking lot is complete, the shopping cart corrals could be constructed and the shopping carts manufactured and shipped to the store. Employee training could occur once employees are fully recruited and the shelving, signage, and checkouts are installed. With the parking lot complete, landscaping and removal of the temporary fencing could occur. About Coffee wants to ensure things go smoothly with their opening so after employees are trained and the shopping carts arrive, they will stock all the shelves and conduct final testing via a simulated opening. The grand opening can only occur after the shelves are stocked and the simulated opening has taken place, as well as the landscaping completed and the temporary fencing removed.620W24%20Assignment%202.pdf 8 / 9 79% + Based on your experiences managing the construction of other About Coffee stores and information provided by potential subcontractors, you have developed the following chart with estimates for normal durations and normal costs, in addition to crash costs and crash times, in the event it would be necessary to accelerate a specific activity. Normal Normal Crashed Activity Description Time Costs Time Crashed weeks (weeks) Costs* A Building permits 3 $5,000 3 $5,000 B Temp. fencing & clear site 5 $45,000 $55,000 Recruit management team 14 $70,000 10 $96,000 Complete foundation 8 $600,000 6 $700,000 Complete building exterior 7 $320,000 $390,000 Complete building interior 7 $400,000 4 $445,000 G Complete parking lot 3 $120,000 $145,000 H Recruit employees 6 $18,000 $32,000 Building inspection $4,000 $4,000 Shelving, signage & checkouts $280,000 $340,000 Train employees $55,000 2 $68,000 Shopping carts & corrals 8 $30,000 6 $38,000 M Landscape & remove temp. fencing $20,000 2 $35,000 N Stock shelves & final testing $22,000 $40,000 Grand Opening *Crashed costs are the total costs associated with the accelerated activity. The weekly increase in costs for a given activity is assumed to be constant. Question 6. Project Duration and Cost (15 pts) Please complete the following: a. (7 pts) Completed Activity Table: Activity Table (template posted with assignment) with "Immediate Predecessors" and "Crash Cost per Week" columns completed. It is expected that each person in your group complete this step individually prior to meeting together to discuss differences. b. (4 pts) Work Breakdown Structure: Prepare a Work Breakdown Structure for the construction of the building. You should use all of the tasks the case has described as well as adding at least 10 of your own. The WBS should not exceed 1 page. Use an indented format. The additional tasks are for this question only. (4 pts) Network Diagram: Prepare a network diagram (before crashing) of the activities provided in the question (ignore what you recommended in part b, use the original activity list). Identify the paths and the length (in weeks) of each path. Specifically identify the critical path(s). What is the expected project duration and expected project cost?Question 7. Project Crashing and Activity Delays (20 pts) (15 pts) You are considering completing this project in the shortest time possible. What is the fastest the project can be completed, and the associated costs of that approach (without incurring any unnecessary costs)? Your solution must indicate the step by step one week at a time) order and duration of the 'crashing' of activities so that the company President can choose their preferred combination of cost and schedule Indicate incremental crash costs and total costs for fastest project completion. After preparing a crashing table as above, answer the following questions: a. (3 pts) After the project was progressing at normal times, the subcontractor ran into problems completing the building exterior. One of the two on-site cranes had a hydraulic failure and replacement parts had to be ordered and installed. This meant that all lifting during that time had to be completed by a single crane resulting in a two-week delay for completing the building exterior. If you want to complete the project in the original "normal" time, what specific actions must you take to minimize costs while still completing the building as originally scheduled? Justify your answer. b. (2 pts) Hoping to open the store exactly one week before Friday of Labour Day long weekend, the company President has asked if the grand opening could possibly occur? Why, or why not
