Paulinas subjects at school included Maths, English, Afrikaans, Home Economics, Biology and Computyping. Her favourite subject was Biology as she found it interesting and enjoyed learning about people, animals and nature. Maths and English were her least favourite subjects. She struggled to understand maths and did not enjoy writing essays in English.

Paulina is currently doing a marketing degree and enjoying it as she is learning a lot and exploring different fields. She would like to continue with social studies as she would like to help people. Interests include boyfriend, parties, hockey, movies and outdoor activities such as skiing, tennis and swimming.

Paulinas achievements include being a prefect, being in the first hockey team and getting merits and awards at school. She considers her best talents as leadership (she got a special leadership award), having good listening skills, talking to people and selling skills. Her aspirations are to excel in marketing and sales and earn enough money to be able to open and run a non-profit organisation particularly one involving orphans. She did state that this would be much later in life. The activity that gives her the greatest satisfation is socialising with friends and family and to relieve stress she enjoys walking, going to the movies and sleeping.

Paulina has been a sales asistant in a clothing shop for about 4 years during school holidays and now during university breaks and weekends. She thoroughly enjoyed dealing with customers, building relationships and making new friends, giving advice, receiving commision and incentives when she reached the sales goals. She found it rewarding. When she left school, she worked for a year in a small company. She started as a receptionist and did that for about seven months and then went into sales. She didnt enjoy the reception job as it was very repetitive and boring. There were not enough challenges and she didnt feel a sense of satisfaction. She was earning a very good salary, especially as she did not have previous experience and didnt have a formal qualification. She enjoyed the sales side far more but realised she wouldnt have a good future without formal qualifications so she decided to leave the job and become a student.

The skills Paulina learnt in her job were interpersonal relationship skills, communication skills, dealing with people (she used to be shy), assessing needs and giving advice and basic computer skills. At home, Paulina learnt life skills (eg, coping with setbacks), how to have a positive attitude and be resilient. She also realised that she can achieve whatever she puts her mind to and that she has the ability to learn quickly which will enable her to have many options and doing things properly once she starts them. The skills she has learnt elsewhere include team work, leading people, not to take everyone at face value and that people must earn trust and respect.

Paulina feels the qualities that have helped her in life include confidence, resilience, tolerance, ability to make decisions, ability to lisen well and communicate, persistence and determination to do what she puts her mind to. The qualities she would like to work on are patience, focus, attention and stubbornness. She feels she has a good balance between work and family life. The meaning of work is important to her as it is a means of meeting basic needs, reaching goals and achieving satisfaction of something done well, the ability to learn and grow and improve ones mind and abilities. Career success for Paulina is excelling in what one does and striving to do better and improve the way things are done. It includes earning a good salary, enjoying what one does and knowing that one has achieved ones goals. The greatest concern is not being able to get a job, especially in current times or accepting a job that one doesnt enjoy as one cannot find anything else.
