Pauline works as a nurse at a hospital run by the East West NHS Trust.

Tunde works as a nurse at the same hospital. He earns 11,000 per annum

more than Pauline but he is one of a number of recent recruits who has been

paid more than existing staff in an effort by the trust to attract new recruits from

the private sector.

Frank works as a doctor at the same hospital. He earns 13,000 per annum

more than Pauline. He works the same hours as Pauline but he can be called

upon to work extra hours in an emergency.

Gabby works as a nurse at a different hospital under the same trust. He has a

ten year longer service record than Pauline and he is paid 10,000 more than

Pauline.

Pauline wishes to bring a claim for equal pay but she is told by her line manger

that if she makes a fuss about her pay she might find herself being demoted

as the hospital budget will not stretch any further and it may be necessary to

combine two posts.

Advise Pauline as to the issues that arise in her claim for equal pay.
