Often times, when I teach this class in person, I ask students to review two case studies of clients with depressive symptoms, and depending on the clients' names in the case studies, as a group, classes often label female-named clients with Major Depressive Disorder and overlook the same symptoms in a male-named client. This is just one of many examples. Consider what you know about race, biological sex, socially-constructed gender, sexual identity, social class, and other factors of diversity. Are there examples that you can think of where a cultural bias in diagnosis might impact someone's treatment or access to care? Are there times where we might overlook a diagnosis OR pathologize a 'normal' behavior based on a bias or stigma? Share your thoughts in an initial post. As always, support your response with examples from the readings or videos as appropriate. Your first post is due by 11:59 PM on Thursday of the deadline week. Then, be sure to return to the Discussion Board to provide at least two substantive academic responses to your classmates by 11:59 PM on Sunday of the deadline week. Assignment 1
