PERFORMANCE TASK Which Race? Choose a city for your sailboat race, and estimate your travel costs. San Francisco Sydney Harbor Mykonos San Francisco, California The Golden Gate bridge spans the entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. San Francisco Bay is a busy port, and recreational boaters must watch for shipping traffic. If you can drive to San Francisco, you'll need about $500 for gas, and parking expenses. If you plan to fly to San Francisco, you'll need $800 for round trip airfare. Your hotel will cost $250ight, and you want to stay for five nights. Have fun!San Francisco O This race course is in San Francisco Harbor, near the Golden Gate Bridge. The entire Bay is relatively shallow, with swift tidal currents. The Bay offers a variety of weather hazards: storms, high winds, dense fog, and very often, rough seas. The first leg of the course is parallel to the Bridge. There is a Hazard Buoy between the race course and the bridge. Sailors often use the Hazard Buoy and Bridge towers to help them navigate around the course. The distance between the bridge towers is 4200 feet. Choose a craft to sail for your race. Laser Sailboard Catamaran The racing Catamaran is a two-hulled sailboat, and is typically faster than regular single-hulled boats like the Laser. Two thin hulls reduce the drag and increase power from the sail. Because the boats are wider, they are more stable and have room for two people. Catamarans can be harder to steer and slower to turn. They are less likely to capsize, but when they do, they are harder to turn back over. Because the course is short and the boats are all the same, the race is won by the skill of the sailor. Assume that you're a good sailor, and can steer tightly around the buoys, so that your course follows the triangles made by the buoys. There are three marker buoys (A,B,C). You don't know the Wind Direction B distance between the buoys. The Buoy markers are set so that Angle B is a 60 degree 60 angle, and angle C is a 60 degree angle. C 60 Note that the wind is blowing opposite direction to line AB. AQA Finishing Starting TrianglePERFORMANCE TASK Your Proposal Having done your research, it's time to write your proposal.
