Guidance and Expectations
Your Personal Leadership Development Plan should consist of six sections. The first section is an introduction and key findings or areas of focus from self-reflection, key insights from your weekly personal reflection papers, and the Leadership Self-Assessment you will take: MGMT 6150 Leadership Self Assessment.pdf You do NOT need to submit this Leadership Self Assessment, previous reflection papers, or other supporting documents along with your Personal Leadership Development Plan. The only thing you will submit for your final is your Personal Leadership Development Plan.
Sections two through six of your Personal Leadership Development Plan apply the two to three (2-3) key principles of each one of \"The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership\" from The Leadership Challenge by James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner to your unique situation and clearly state a course of action for personal leadership development. Here is a brief overview:
- Introduction and Personal Self-Assessment
- Model the Way Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
- Inspire a Shared Vision Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
- Challenge the Process Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
- Enable Others to Act Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
- Encourage the Heart Principles and Action Plan (two to three (2-3) key principles you are focusing on)
The grading rubric for this assignment is also broken down into specific assessments for each one of these areas. Please carefully review the grading rubric as you complete this assignment.
Section 1: Introduction and Personal Self-Assessment
Your Personal Leadership Development Plan should begin with a personal self-assessment section that provides a thoughtful and meaningful assessment of your current leadership behaviors based on personal reflection, observations from your weekly personal reflection papers, and the Leadership Self-Assessment. Similar to the case study analysis and personal reflection assignments used throughout this course, this first section should address the following questions:
- How well do you currently demonstrate the principles of \"The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership\" from Kouzes and Posners The Leadership Challenge?
- Which of these principles do you use most effectively and which do you use least effectively?
- What should you do to use the principles of \"The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership\" more effectively?
This section should also demonstrate a solid understanding of the principles and concepts presented in the reading materials and discussions and how they apply to your unique situation.
The Personal Self-Assessment Section acts as the overall introduction to your paper, providing the background on your leadership behaviors and guidance on the direction that you will take in the rest of the paper.
Sections 2-6: The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership fromThe Leadership Challenge
The next five sections should each address one of The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership from The Leadership Challenge.
Application of Principles. Each section should demonstrate a solid understanding of how to apply the principles and concepts from the reading assignments and discussions associated with that specific Practice of Exemplary Leadership to your unique situation and the 2-3 principles from each practice you will focus on.
To meet expectations, the section must demonstrate a mastery of these principles by specifically referencing and appropriately applying two to three (2-3) principles from EACH practice (i.e. Practice 1: Model the Way; Practice 2: Inspire a Shared Vision; etc.) to support your personal situation. Failure to reference and/or apply these principles from The Leadership Challenge to your unique situation may result in no points being awarded for that section.
Clearly Stated Course of Action for Personal Development. Each section should clearly state a personal development course of action related to your two to three (2-3) principles that will help you to further develop that specific Practice of Exemplary Leadership. The course of action should outline two to three (2-3) specific things you will do, steps you will take, etc. to develop each of these principles. The action plan should be supported by principles from the reading material and discussions and applied to your unique situation.
