Photo Essay Assignment 2022 Due week 13 In this assignment you will use visual representations to present a topic of your choice. In a written essay, one creates a thesis and presents evidence to prove it. In a photo essay, you will similarly develop a point, this time using photographs as your evidence. Write out your thesis on your first slide, separate from the photos in your essay. This will help direct you as you choose photos and make sure they all fit. For the written part which is worth 20% - You will include a written summary that explains why each photo was chosen and how it fits within your essay. This should be a separate document in APA format. You can submit both under this assignment. I recommend looking at sample photo essays. There are numerous ones on the Time.com site. Not all of them fit the description of the type of photo essay you are required to create, but there are many great examples for you to view. In addition to creating the essay, you will analyze the photographs and present your work as a presentation using power point or a program of choice. Step 1: Select a theme. Step 2: Look for photos that match and support the topic you have chosen Step 3: Select the photos that will best tell the story you are trying to convey to make your point Step 4: Assemble your essay & prepare your presentation Include appropriate auditory material which helps to set the tone or reinforce your point. Possibilities include music, a speech, and an interview with someone with first-hand knowledge of the topic, etc... Requirements: 20 photos minimum Reference page(s) citing your sources in APA format (e.g., as the last slide of your PowerPoint) Remember, sometimes less is moreDo not use 4 photos that show the same issue instead use 1 that will have staying impact. Try to find the background of the photo. Questions to think of: Consider the logistical and artistic choices of the photograph and how these impacted the photo: Staged? Candid? How did the photographer happen to be there? Framing? Composition? How close does the subject feel in the photo? Color or B&W? Use of color and light? Backlighting? How does the photo support your thesis? What part of your essay does the photo fit in? Why did you choose this photo? You may also consider your choices of selecting one photo over another for one or more of these criteria. For your photo essay consider the following: How much narration and text support the photo essay? Do the photos in the essay stand alone or do they need to be seen as a part of the whole? Describe your reaction to the essay. Do you anticipate this reaction from all viewers? Some of your choices may be iconic photos that are well known, others obscure but meaningful Sources to consider: Digital Georgian College Library National Archives Time.com National Geographics website Print Magazine Covers Your own photos Sample photo essays (for structural ideas only!) APA Resources: - Related appropriate chapters in your text - Cites and Sources & for further formatting assistance refer to video on black board. Presentation of your work: To present your photo essay you will need to compile it into a digital format that can be shown from the computer (e.g., as a PowerPoint or such). *DO NOT take more than one photo from a single photo essay. Your task is to create your own production using the material of others, not just to present someone elses work. You will be graded on the information (accuracy, thoroughness, insightfulness, etc.) the manner of presentation (clarity, organization, and audience engagement) and the organization and content of the written component.
