Place cells in hippocampus increase firing rates when the subject moves across selected parts of an environment. When we recorded place cells in a small cylinder and a larger box, we found that in the large space, a single place cell has a spatial receptive field that corresponds to multiple discrete locations of the environment whereas in the small space they fire in only one discrete location.
