Note: When using graphical methods, reasonable approximate answers will be accepted. (a) Identify the solute, carrier and solvent in this extraction process and briefly describe your reasoning. [3 marks] (b) For the top tie line in the ternary phase diagram, determine the weight-based distribution coefficients for the solute, the carrier and the solvent. Briefly discuss the significance of the distribution coefficient values with respect to the feasibility of the extraction process. [3 marks] (c) Determine the minimum solvent flow rate to guarantee that two liquid phases are formed in the system. Describe what would happen if this minimum flow rate is not achieved. [4 marks] (d) Assuming we use 100kgh1 of solvent in the extraction process, calculate the minimum number of equilibrium stages required in a counter-current extractor in order to achieve a raffinate stream with a mass fraction of A of less than 15wt%. [6 marks] (e) Briefly discuss the main advantages and limitations of liquid-liquid extraction as a separation technology. Within this context, describe at least two potential strategies to further decrease the mass fraction of A in the raffinate below 15wt%. Clearly state any relevant assumptions.
