4. Maths in Context - Nursing [20 Marks] Remember that questions asked as worded sentences need to be answered as worded sentences. Numerical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are required in many areas of nursing, including Fluid Balance Charts where nurses record the fluid input and output of patients. Ratios and rates relate to the concentrating or diluting of solutions, and calculating intravenous fluid requirements (drip rates). Drug calculations involve working with fractions and percentages, as well as converting among different units of measurement. Rounding decimal answers to an appropriate degree of accuracy is also important. Medication overdoses or underdoses are typically dangerous, and therefore accuracy of calculations and conversions is essential. Scenario As a registered nurse, you are allocated to caring for a patient, Lachlan Scott. Lachlan is a young man with a chest infection. He has been prescribed 6 mg of Drug A per kilogram of his body weight per day. Lachlan weighs 85 kg. 1. (a) How many mg of Drug A will Lachlan have each day? [1] (b) If this medication is to be given in four equally divided doses, how many mg should [1] Lachlan receive per dose? (c) Calculate and state how much is a single dose in grams (correct to 3 decimal places). [1]
