Skankane Transport and Strategic Human Resources Skankane Transport specialises in the transportation of containers between the various ports around the country and their inland destinations. In the past year, 80% of their trips have either commenced or terminated in Gauteng, as this province provides for the bulk of South Africa's economic activity. The company currently employs 75 trucks and some 200 long distance drivers, of which 150 are located at its depot in Newcastle and 50 in City Deep in Johannesburg. The Board and management team of Skankane have just completed their 5year strategic growth plan, As part of their strategic plan, and change in the culture. they have formulated the following core values to guide them on the route of strategy implementation: - Reliability - Superior customer service - Fairness towards our stakeholders - Innovation In terms of the plan. the company has set for itself a number of very challenging targets which are to be achieved overthe next five years. The most important of these targets are the following: - They want to double their market share and turnover in the next five years {20% growth per annum} - They want to increase their fleet of trucks and trailers by 50% and their drivers complement by 70% over the next five years. - In 18 months they want to open a container terminal in Gauteng, where the bulk of their clients are positioned - All the new drivers would be based at the terminal. The terminal will be furnished with stateoftheart equipment, such as cranes and a weighbridge, as well as a mechanical division and workshops to assist with the maintenance of the fleet, They want to manage the terminal and maintenance functions themselves. These plans and targets seem quite daunting, yet the Board is convinced that they are achievable. The need to apply the legislation, such as the Labour Relations Act {LRA}, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), the Employment Equity Act (EEA) and the BroadBased Black Economic Empowerment Act [BBBEE}. and transportation legislation. such as Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act (AARTOj. All new employees need to be committed to the strategic objectives of the organisation and be committed to the values of the organisation by being reliable, innovative, focused on superior customer service, and show fairness towards all stakeholder.
