when they designed the product: simple configuration and integration, robust functionality, and high- end performance.14 While they did not know who their exact customers were when they designed the system, they did have an idea of what the market needed, hence the development of these three principles. Embedded AIE was written in Java and was based on open-source technology, making it highly portable and easy to integrate. The two most important features of the platform were its small footprint (less than 20 MB of disk space) and its scalability (the ability to add servers incrementally as necessary). Selling the Customizable Platform In order to sell the customizable platform, Attivio had to build strong relationships with its customers, who were mostly lead users, through a variety of channels. It required the company to maintain a relationship on three separate levels: a technical sales level, a traditional sales level, and a professional services level. The technical sales team promoted the product to clients, as the engineers and software programmers from both companies would work together to configure and extend the platform for the client's specific needs. The technical teams would then build a relationship with each other based upon a mutual goal of developing the platform as it related to the solution the client wanted to achieve. The client's technical team would also have the ability to continue tailoring the product to their specific needs even after the configuration and the extension of the initial platform was complete. After the platform was developed, the technical sales team would need to move on to other clients, so this was when the relationships of the professional services team and the traditional sales team needed to be built. The professional services team was responsible for helping the client implement the platform upon completion of the configuration and extension by the technical sales team. This process involved both assistance with the implementation and support for the product after the installation was finalized. The traditional sales team would help to maintain the relationship on the business level between the two management teams and help build a level of trust between the two companies. Due to the number of relationships required to be successful within this approach, if Attivio had any expansion plans, it would have required them to continue to hire more staff from every different aspect of the business. The hiring process was a very costly and time-consuming endeavor and posed many problems for startups who were trying to become self-sufficient. National Average Salary of Employee on an Annual Basis (5-9 Years of Experience) Software Engineer Senior Software Architect Software Salesman Software Consultant Selling a Finished Product $70,783 $99,044 $57,227 $83,405 In order to sell a finished product, Attivio would need to continue to develop its AIE into where it could be sold as a final product, able to be easily installed by clients without further development work.
