Homework 10: Instructions: Place all work into a one-to-two page document. Upload the document onto he Canvas homework page by the due date. Documents must be in one of the ollowing formats: .doc, . docx, or .pdf. Data for completing these problems may ve found under the "Files/Homework/Homework 10" page on Canvas. You are highly encouraged to use statistical software to compute test tatistics, p-values, and confidence intervals on this assignment 1. A team of researchers believe that former major league players with nicknames live longer than those that do not. To test their claim, the researchers sampled 18 deceased major leaguers with nicknames and 12 deceased major leaguers without nicknames and recorded their age at death. The file nicknames.csv contains the data from their sample. "Years" is their age at death, and "Nickname" is whether or not the person had a nickname: people with nicknames are denoted by a ' 1 ' and people without nicknames are denoted by a ' 0 .' Assume their test is conducted at the =0.05 level, and that ages at death are approximately normally distributed. (a) (1pt) For both the major leaguers with and without nicknames compute the average and standard deviation of their ages at death. (b) (1pt) Write the null and alternative hypotheses for this test. (c) (1pt) Assuming that both groups have equal standard deviations, compute a test statistic for your hypothesis test. (d) (1pt) Compute the p-value. What do you conclude from your hypothesis test? (e) (1pt Extra Credit) Assuming equal standard deviations, compute a 90% confidence interval for the true difference in age at death between major leaguers with a nickname and those without one. (f) (2pts) Repeat parts (c) and (d) without assuming equal standard deviations.
