Online Lab Measurement, Uncertainty, and Falling Bodies \"There is an art ... or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. ...Clearly it is the second part, the missing, which presents the difficulties.\" Douglas Adams - Life, the Universe, and Everything Purpose The goal of this lab is to help you develop a scientific understanding of measurement and the uncertainties associated with making measurements. We'll also apply these ideas to the project of measuring falling bodies and the gravitational force that causes them to fall. What You Will Need To do this lab you will need access to the following equipment: Something you can drop from a height (like a tennis ball having 3 makes it easier) Arapid timing device, like a stopwatch (many smart phones and watches have these built in) e Apiece of string long enough to extend the distance you are dropping things e Avyardstick, measuring tape, or other method of measuring the length of string you are using. Aweight to tie to the string (like a metal washer) A marker to mark the string It's a big help if you have the opportunity work with someone on this. You can work with 1 or 2 classmates or a friend or family member outside the class who just wants to be helpful. Also, it helps if you can drop things safely from a second or even third story location. If not, you can still do this dropping from lower heights but the uncertainties in the measurements will be larger. Preparation
