Population growth problems often give rise to rate equations that are first-order. For example, the following equation dn dt An - Bn - Cn2 might describe how the number of individuals in a population, n, varies with time. Here the first term corresponds to the birth of new members, and the second and third terms correspond to deaths. In particular, the second term is associated with "natural" deaths, and the third term corresponds to death as a result of exhausted resources. First, let's set C=0. a) What are the units of A, based on the units of the left-hand side? What might be a logical choice for A, given that the population is made up of people? Please explain (note that you have some freedom in this, but I want to know your reasoning for this choice). b) What are the units of B? What might be a logical choice? C) Time to code you will scrutinize how n changes over time (Euler method). Based on your choices for A & B, and an initial value of n=2, how big will n be in 2000 years? Plot n vs time to demonstrate growth. You are free to adapt code from the class and modify it for your own purpose (e.g., rad_decay.m might be a good starting point). Also, plot the growth given by an analytical solution of the problem for comparison. In other words, code the analytical solution n= directly (c'mon, you can solve that, with C=0!), and plot on the same plot as your simulation Now, assume C is NOT zero. d) Why is the third term proportional to n 2 (i.e., why is there a term associated with decrease in population that is proportional to the square? What is the physical interpretation of this? One hint is for you to think about the units)
