An ammonia synthesis unit with a single converter is converting a fresh feed gas containing, on a dry basis,
73%H2,24%N2, and 3% Ar. The gases leaving the converter are fed to a cooler such that most of the NH3
is condensed and removed. Upon reduction of pressure, all gases dissolved in the liquid NH3 are evolved
and separated. The residual gases from the cooler, including some uncondensed NH3 which is approximately
15 of the condensed, are recycled. If a purge provided in the recycle line consists 3.5%NH3 and 25%Ar,
determine the following:
Percent composition of the purge stream
Single-pass conversion of H2
Overall yield of liquid NH3
Liquid ammonia produced from the ammonia synthesis unit is then sent to an ammonia-oxidation plant to
produce oxidation products that will be sent to an absorber. The absorber is operated with a countercurrent
flow of water. The exhaust gas exits to the atmosphere at a composition of 0.3 mole fixed N(due to NO2
only) and 4.3 mole active O per 100 moles of N2. The exhaust gas contains moisture (Pwater=1.44 psia) and
exits at 1atm. Liquid analysis of the nitric acid product gives 65%HNO3,1.6%NO2, and the balance, water.
The entire plant uses up 1000 kilograms of water for every 100kmol of fresh feed to the ammonia synthesis
unit , and Ar).
Determine the following ratios:
a. Total dry air per fresh feed (kmol air/kmol fresh feed)
b. Exhaust gas per fresh feed (kmol gas/kmol fresh feed)
c. Product acid per fresh feed (kg acid/kmol fresh feed)
Compute for the percent recovery of nitrogen oxides leaving the system as liquid products in the oxidation-
absorption unit.
