Carplo-Bemido, LPON-PEP, p. 93 A very Important property of any object with mass is that It moves and responds to a gravitational field as if its whole weight is concentrated at a single point called its " center of gravity". This property is important because it allows simple application of the mathematical equations we have used so far, such as Newton's laws of motion, and the law of universal gravitation. This in turn allows precise engineering for the design and construction of buildings, complex structures and machinery. How do we find the center of gravity of a given object? Many children can do this on instinct: simply balance an object on the tip of a finger or a pen. For this Activity, balance the objects given below, then mark the center of gravity using a pencil. * A circular cardboard disk of diameter 12.0 cm. * A rectangular piece of cardboard of width 10.0 cm and length 20.0 cm. Analysis: 1. Draw a line along the diameter of the circular disk. Mark the midpoint of the diameter. Measure the distance of the center of gravity from the disk edge. What can you say about the location of the center of gravity of the circular disk? 2. Draw diagonal lines connecting opposite comers of the rectangle. What can you say about the location of the center of gravity of the rectangular object? 3. Predict the location of the center of gravity of a solid spherical ball made of a single material. (In physics this is called a solid sphere of uniform density.)
