As was the custom in that day, the man hoped that his wife would soon deliver a son. So, he made this disposition: If the child was a girl, then she and her mother would share the money equally. If the child was a boy, he was to have 500 ducats, leaving the widow only 300. Shortly after the man died, his widow gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl.
