Distributed Enterprise is defined as a distributed computing environment that manages its staff using a scalable hybrid or cloud IT infrastructure that helps provide access, real-time data exchange, and quick responses to any challenges (Stokes, n.d.). Essentially, it is the modern interpretation of a central office space that uses localized IT staff and network facilities. The difference between a traditional enterprise and a distributed enterprise is that it includes remote teams working from different areas of the world while also having an in-house team that works on-site on a full-time basis (Azorin, 2022). The three important components that involve Distributed Enterprise include:

  • On-site and remote teams
  • Teams are available in different locations
  • Offices are scattered across different cities or countries

A Distributed Enterprise is a set of employees and departments that provide microservices, in which each component has its own management center, runs on a limited number of processes, and performs better than monolithic environments (Stokes, n.d.). Adopting the distributed model allows companies to become more flexible and resilient, as they do not depend on a centralized office, infrastructure, or team, but rather it relies on a larger network of professionals who "leverage regional nodes strategically located across different cities, countries, or regions" (Azorin, 2022). Some of the advantages that this model can bring include an increase in work productivity, a larger talent pool to select new team members, lower operational costs, improved intention rates, and the creation of a better sustainable business.

By implementing the distributed model into an enterprise, companies can increase their physical presence using a set of robust systems and processes, which allows them to employ and utilize culture, innovation, and vision (Mangtani, 2021). Companies can take advantage of the popularity of remote working technology by using the Distributed Enterprise that will make a faster, efficient, and cost saving business model. It will also provide them the ability to hire the best employees from all different parts of the world, rather than being limited to focusing on searching for employees in a specific area.

Questions:

  1. Can you identify any disadvantages the Distribution Enterprise model may have?
  2. Is this model something that Jumbo Carpets can take advantage of?
  3. How would it benefit the Jumbo Carpets business processes?
