from the humid air Problem 2: Distillation is a common unit used for mixtures separations, namely those composed of components of different boiling points. It is widely available in many chemical industries that involves reactions. The typical distillation unit is made up of a column, condenser and reboiler (shown below) and is based on the fact that the vapor of a boiling mixture will be richer in the components that have lower boiling points. Re-boiler provides the necessary vaporization for the process and condenser cools-down and condense the vapor that leaves the top of the column. When the vapor is condensed, the condensate contain the more volatile components which has lower boiling point. Considering a ternary mixture containing 65 wt% benzene (S.G=0.878), 25 wt% toluene (S.G=0.867) and rest of xylene (S.G=0.860) is subjected to a distillation column. The feed enters the column at constant temperature and flowrate of 250 L/hr. Assuming that the unit you have is operated at a temperature that results in a separation efficiency of 93% toward benzene. The efficiency of the unit is the ratio of amount of more volatile component in the top stream relative to that in the feed stream. This efficiency of the unit had also resulted in having 8 kg/hr of toluene in top stream and 17 kg/hr of xylene in bottom stream. Solve for the following: a) What is the basis of your calculation will be? b) Draw the process flowchart c) Perform the degree of freedom analysis on the distillation column d) Molar flowrate of the upper stream e) Ratio of benzene recovered in top stream to the bottom stream f) Percentage of xylene in the upper and bottom streams g) What will be benzene flowrate in bottom stream if efficiency got increased to 97% h) How would composition of the streams will be affected by increased efficiency to 95%
