Answer: This discussion and the article provided bring up so many different thoughts for me. On one hand, I can completely understand why the residents around these tent communities are raising concerns. No one wants to feel unsafe anywhere, but especially near their homes where they should feel comfortable and at ease. Particularly, in Halifax, where I have been living for over a decade, I have never felt uncomfortable walking around, day or night, in areas of high rates of homelessness. I suppose this is because I do not find that these people are overly aggressive here. In the article it appears to be a different story and the audacity seems to be much steeper. Therefore, the residents are right to be questioning these tent communities. That being said, the question of where are the homeless supposed to go is raised. The mention of putting them up in hotels is certainly an option, but how long can that last and how feasible is this option over time? The question of regulation needs to stay with those who enforce laws. Order can come within communities as we have learned in the 'legal consciousness' portion of our course, but the issue of homelessness seems to be a problem for professionals to tackle. Personally, I feel looking at the root of a problem is always the best place to start. Instead of focusing on where to move the homeless, maybe the real concern should be how do we eradicate homelessness? The focus should be on mental health, addiction services, job skills; what do these people need and how can they be implemented back into 'normal' standards of society? There is such a lack of funding when it comes to helping others mentally and physically, yet 70 million dollars can be spent to twin a highway for 15km (HWY 103 in Nova Scotia). Why can't more money be put towards low-income housing, domes for the homeless, and programs to help people build better lives? Why can't more funding be put towards policing these tenting areas more frequently, in an attempt for general deterrence? I feel that because tent communities and homelessness are a public concern that all voices should be heard and taken into consideration, but the ultimate decision should lie with the government, municipal and provincial.
