1. Hobfoll and Leiberman (1987) reported research on how married women cope with the outcome of pregnancy. The research was done in Israel and involved a number of different studies. The data below come from samples of married heterosexual women who had normal live births. Each woman was classified as having either high or low self-esteem and as having either a low or high level of intimacy with her spouse, factors that presumably would help cope with the stresses associated with giving birth. The women were interviewed one day after giving birth and were administered the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CESD) scale, which provides scores between 0 and 60 (higher scores indicate greater depression).
