Ventilation systems on most airplanes have a ventilation rate of about 15cfm per maximum number of passengers (cubic feet per minute per passenger). Half of that flow is fresh air, while the other half is air taken from within the plane and processed through a HEPA filter which removes 99% of the virus particles in the air before being returned to the plane. Consider a plane with one passenger who is releasing 100,000 virus particles / min into the air. You can neglect settling of the particles (which is probably not a good assumption). A) Sketch the system for this problem. Be sure to account for both the fresh air and the reprocessed air. B) Write down the total and species (virus) mass balances for the air in the plane. C) Derive an equation for the concentration of virus particles in the air in the plane as a function of time. D) Estimate the number of virus particles per ft3 in the air 1 hour into a full flight on a ERJ 145 (Embraer Regional Jet 145 -- this is what American Airlines flies in and out of State College). Show how you evaluated any of the required parameter values. E) Compare the result in part D with the virus concentration after 15min of sitting at the gate with no air circulation
