Econometrics: Student Performance and school size - Introduction. The first paragraphs/slides of your introduction should state the question of interest. What is the purpose of your study? Try to convince the reader that you topic is an important one. Use literature to support your ideas. You must provide a summary of several papers you have carefully reviewed and are relevant to your study. - Theoretical Model. Describe the theoretical model upon which you will develop your empirical work. This theoretical model describes the relationship between your dependent and explanatory variables. Ideally, you will provide a general view of the problem followed by a discussion of the main components or specific variables. - The Data. In this section you will describe the data that you use. Present a table of descriptive statistics and possibly some graphics for the dependent and explanatory variables that you use. Discuss both the strengths and weaknesses of the data you will be using. Briefly summarize what you have learned from the descriptive statistics. - Empirical Model. This section will describe the models that you will estimate. Discuss what functional form you will use (level-level, log-level, etc.). Discuss the empirical measures for each of the variables, units, etc. Discuss changes in specification. - Empirical Results. In this section, you should present and use your empirical results. You must provide a table that succinctly summarizes the empirical results you obtain. Apply concepts, techniques and methods learned in class. - Conclusion. You should briefly describe what you have learned from completing the project. Does your empirical work provide support for the theory? Do the results seem reasonable in light of your knowledge of economics and economics literature? What additional work would you carry out if you had more time? There is much interest in the effect of school size on student performance. (See, for example, The New York Times Magazine, 5/28/95.) One claim is that, everything else being equal, students at smaller schools fare better than those at larger schools. This hypothesis is assumed to be true even after accounting for differences in class sizes across schools. The file MEAP93 contains data on 408 high schools in Michigan for the year 1993. We can use these data to test the null hypothesis that school size has no effect on standardized test scores against the alternative that size has a negative effect. Performance is measured by the percentage of students receiving a passing score on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) standardized tenth-grade math test (math10). School size is measured by student enrollment (enroll). The null hypothesis is H0:enroll=0, and the alternative is H1:enroll
