Please do not attempt this question until you have gone through the material on relative risk in my Measures of Association YouTube playlist and my videos on conditional probability in my Probability and Applications YouTube playlist. You will not be ready for this high-level question until you understand the difference between the AND operator and the GIVEN operator as discussed in my Probability and Applications YouTube playlist and how to calculate relative risk as discussed in my Probability and Applications YouTube playlist. Go to YouTube and type into the search bar: We Were There Cutter CDC Polio. Watch the CDC documentary. This inspiring presentation highlights the ingenuity and intelligence of our CDC and how statistics and data analysis were used for public health during the polio epidemic. About 17 minutes into the documentary you will find a table entitled the 1954 FIELD TRIAL OF IPV. Make a two-by-two cross classification frequency table similar to the ones that I make in my Youtube videos in my Measures of Association YouTube playlist and my Applications of Conditional Probability Youtube playlist. Make PLACEBO the first row header of this table and NOT INOCULATED the second row header of this table. Make PARALYSIS the first column header of this table and NO PARALYSIS the second column header of this table. Determine the odds of randomly selecting a study subject who was paralyzed given that they were not inoculated (rounded as a decimal to the nearest hundredth). Remark: This table and this computation is only comparing the placebo recipients with those who were not inoculated. (Those who were vaccinated are not part of this problem.)
