When the voltage across the capacitor reaches 77 V, the neon gas ionizes quickly and the lamp becomes a good conductor, which causes the capacitor to discharge almost instantaneously. The energy stored in the capacitor is given off as a ash of orange light. After the ash, the charging process starts again. a.
