Employees can make changes to their W-4 at any time during the year; this allows the employee to adjust their withholding if a major life event happens, like having a baby or getting married. The amount of taxes withheld depends on how you will file your taxes and how many dependents you have. The employee will have to amend their W-4 to account for a new dependent or a change in tax-filing status. If an employee asked to change their W-4 to increase their withholding in hopes of getting a bigger return next year, I would advise them that although they might get a bigger return during tax season, that withheld money could be going into an interest-bearing account instead of to the government for free, essentially. It also could be going towards more helpful things like paying extra down on your car loan every month, which would subsequently save you money in interest. Ultimately, I would tell my employee that it is their preference to have extra money withheld, however, I would mention that it could be doing more good elsewhere. I, personally, have had extra money withheld before; I wasn't entirely aware of the disadvantages of this until a family member suggested the same thing I mentioned before: that money could be earning interest or saving you money in interest. I eventually amended my W-4 to remove any extra withholding.
