Regarding the workplace culture reputation at Amazon, the issue that it is a dull place to work has been addressed, depending on the article. Some claim that the culture inappropriately favors employees, while others claim that the employees are to blame. One counterargument to the culture "problem" claims that if the culture is bad, the company would not be growing exponentially, the way that Amazon is (Gimble, 2015). Some claim that the culture is worth it: "We will make huge sacrifices, endure inconceivable hardships and work unimaginably hard, if we feel we are making an important contribution to a cause we believe in" (Murray, 2015). Viewpoints erupted after an article was published calling out the tough deadlines and high stakes for performance. Amazon responded by conducting surveys and addressing issues that presented themselves (Zarya, 2015). That seems to have quieted the noise, or at least demonstrates that management is willing to hear the voices of the most basic needs and those higher on Maslow's list, developing a sense of belonging (Black, et al., 2022). Today, Amazon appears to value their employees and provides powerful benefits, according to their advertisements. They appear to be very profitable, and responsive.

The key difference between a Walmart employee and an Amazon employee is in their levels of interactions with other people. In a Walmart center, Walmart employees are expected to have a high level of customer service and positive interactions, whereas an Amazon fulfillment center is about moving packages efficiently and effectively. When considering some of the motivators at work, there is not one place above the other relative to workplace culture because it is completely dependent on the employee and individual motivators and learned and process needs (Black, et al., 2022). Given the number of employees at each, there is also not one huge company over another, as they are quite equal in number of skilled workers. Amazon has approximately 1.6 million (Coppola, 2023). Walmart has approximately 1.5 million skilled employees (Brown, 2022).

As both Amazon and Walmart shift from their traditionally known forms of retail/e-commerce to a new way of doing business, their employees may need additional support or motivators to keep them engaged and satisfied, thus making the companies profitable. For Amazon, they will need to shift to supporting the customer service model in a face-to-face format, different from what they have done previously. They may need motivation in the areas that Herzberg suggests in the hygiene theory surrounding social interactions (Black, et al., 2022). They may need support in how to assist and converse with people other than co-workers. Conversely, Walmart employees may need incentives to rise to the goal theory of motivation, to package and ship in a timely manner, rather than connecting and belonging to a particular retail center with a community of people and customers (Black, et al., 2022). Both employee groups will need clear definitions of goals and expectations.
