BIOLITE: INNOVATIVE DESIGN FOR GLOBAL SOLUTIONS Research Associate Brian Critch prepared this case under the supervision of Professor Natalie Slawinski of Memorial University and IMD Professor Daina Mazutis as a basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of a business situation. In 2006, Jonathan Cedar and Alec Drummond met at Smart Design, a design consulting company based in New York City. The duo combined their love of the wilderness with a shared a philosophy of finding efficient design solutions to real-world problems. They soon began spending their evenings and weekends working on a design for a more efficient camp stove. Their goal was to create a compact device that would burn wood fuel as efficiently as petroleum so campers could save space and weight in their packs by gathering biomass from their surroundings instead of packing fuels. What began as a side project for the outdoor recreation market eventually led to the pursuit of new products full-time through their own company, BioLite. The company's first camp stove garnered international accolades because it was more environmentally friendly than other camp stoves and its innovative design turned wood used in the stoves into electricity. The company received international attention in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, when BioLite set up free stands where New Yorkers could use its stoves to charge their cell phones while making coffee. The BioLite stove was soon recognized as a valuable innovation not just for developed markets, but also developing countries where a sustainable source of eco-friendly energy could bring tremendous value to millions of people. However, getting to this point required numerous prototypes and testing in international markets to identify and address the needs of BioLite's diverse clientele. Moving forward, Cedar and Drummond had several important strategic decisions to consider including how to bring their innovative technology to different market segments.
