Purpose: The purpose of this assessment is to: 1. provide students the opportunity to engage in research in finance 2. enable students to develop an insight into the relationship between the government's budget balance and the yield curve. Tasks: Obtain the following macroeconomic data for Australia for the period 2004-2021: (a) the yield for Commonwealth Government securities, (b) the budget balance, (c) the cash rate, and (4) 90-day and 180-day rates. 1. Examine the fiscal position (i.e. movement of the budget balance) of the Australian Federal Government for the period 2004-2021. How has the budget balance changed since the COVID-19 pandemic? Briefly predict how you expect the budget balance to move over the next three years. 2. Graph the current Australian yield curve for Commonwealth Government Securities (CGSs). At a minimum you must include the target cash rate, 90-day and 180-day rates, and the 2, 3, 5, and 10-year rates. Explain the shape of the yield curve. Is your explanation consistent with the Expectations theory or the Segmented Market theory of the yield curve, or nether? 3. Examine the relationship between the fiscal position identified in (1) and the yield curve. Does the fiscal balance appear to influence the yield curve, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic? 4. Given your insights from (1)-(3), recommend to the Australian Government financial and fiscal policies that could make Commonwealth Government Securities more attractive to investors. Students need to support their analysis with reference from text and a minimum of six (6) suitable, current and academically accepted sources - check with your tutor if unsure of your sources. Students seeking Credit or higher grades should support their andysis with increased number of reference sources consistent with the grade they are seeking. Topics to be covered: To successfully complete this project, you will use/apply the theories and skills studied in week 1 to week 5 and otherappropriate resources uncovered by your research. Criteria and grade quality 1. Research (extent and application) 30% 2. Analysis and evaluation 30% 3. Recommendations and conclusions 20% 4. Presentation 20% 5. Total 100% Submission 1. Due date: 11:59pm Friday of Week 8 2. Upload soft copy on Turnitin Feedback 1. Results could be viewed on Turnitin in Week 9 2. Project will be graded on Turnitin with detailed feedback.
