Introduction

For this hands-on activity, the collision between a raw chicken egg and a landing pad (safety contraption) that you design and construct will be investigated. Impulse is the concept/equation which will dictate your success! Impulse = Ft = mv where F is the magnitude of the applied force, t is the time interval over which the force is being applied, m is the mass of the object experiencing the force and v is the change in velocity. In order for the raw egg to survive an actual collision with your landing pad, F must be minimized by t being maximized.

Materials

Stop watch or visible clock that displays seconds

Meter Stick

Raw Chicken Egg(s)

A maximum of 10 sheets of copy/printer paper

A maximum of 2 meters of masking tape

A maximum of 5 rubber bands

A maximum of 5 drinking straws

Specifications

Maximum dimensions of "Impulse Landing Pad" cannot exceed 50cm (l) x 50cm (w) x 10cm (h)

Raw chicken egg cannot be altered in any manner

All materials can be cut into smaller pieces

"Impulse Landing Pad" must be placed atop a cement/tile (solid) surface

Procedure

Draw a rough sketch of your "Impulse Landing Pad". Include labels of what each segment will accomplish.

Construct your "Impulse Landing Pad" according to your rough sketch and above mentioned specifications.

Produce a technical drawing of your completed "Impulse Landing Pad" with exact measurements and a minimum of 2 views [top view, side view ...].

Drop the raw chicken egg from a height of 1 meter, 1.5 meters and 2 meters into your "Impulse Landing Pad".

Calculate the acceleration, impulse and t (of collision) for each trial and record into the table below.
