Part 1 Lab Mice - Investigating red dye #40 A Harvard University study fed 15 mice different doses of red dye number 40 and recorded the time of death in weeks. A rules for a completely randomized design were followed. Reference: Journal Natl. Cancer Inst., Vol. 66, p 197-212 Results for female mice, dosage and time of death are shown in the data X1 = time of death for control group (normal mice with no dosage) X2 = time of death for group with low dosage X3 = time of death for group with higher dosage X1 X2 X3 70 49 34 77 60 36 83 63 48 87 67 48 92 70 65 Is there a difference in the average times of death? Answer the following questions: a) This is an Experimental Design Study. For this experiment to be classified as a completely randomized design, what did the experimenters do? b) What is the response variable? How is it measured? c) What is the Factor? d) What are the treatments? e) What is the importance behind having a control group? f) In using ANOVA, what are the populations? (Define each of them!) g) What are the population parameters? h) Required Conditions. Can we assume that the population variances are equal for using ANOVA? A rule of thumb for balanced models is that if the ratio of the largest variance to smallest variance is less than 3 or 4, the F-test will be valid. Is this true for our problem: i) Use ANOVA and run a hypothesis test to see if it can be proven that not all the population means are the same. Do this by setting up a null and alternative hypotheses and showing each step by hand using a "test statistic / rejection region approach". Use alpha = .05. Note: For a demonstration of what I am asking you to do here, see video 1 & video 2 "Restaurant Odors" - 9.1 & 9.2. Tukey Simultaneous 95% Cls Difference of Means for X1, X2, .. X2 - X j) The software Minitab provides a graph of the Tukey Confidence intervals to the right. What can you conclude from these confidence intervals? x3 - x1 k) Based on ANOVA and the pairwise comparisons above, what is your overall conclusion about red dye? X3 - X of- 50 40 -30 -20
