For SPSS Homework 6, you have four major steps for the problem set: the spreadsheet, the factorial ANOVA, the Excel line graph, and the APA write up. Make sure you complete each step for the problem set.

For this assignment, conduct a factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the problem set. For all inferential tests, use a two-tailed test with a 0.05 alpha level.

When completing the homework assignment, please copy and paste your SPSS output into Microsoft Word in order. That is, you should copy and paste the SPSS output for Question 1, then Question 2.

Steps to Complete for the Problem Set

Step 1: SPSS spreadsheet

  1. Put the data into SPSS (data view)
    • You will need ONE column for the between IV and two columns for the within IV (one column per IV level) with dependent variable (SCORES) in the rows of the two columns for the within/repeated IV.
  2. Variable view
    • name the variables
    • label the variables
    • set the number of decimal places to match the data
    • set the measure correctly
  3. Use the snipping tool to paste Variable View & Data View into Microsoft Word

Step 2: SPSS Factorial ANOVA

  1. Run the analysis of variance for mixed methods (including partial eta squared as the measure of effect size, the descriptive statistics, estimated marginal mean for each independent variable, and mean for interaction).
  2. Tips when analyzing the data (these will be confusing until you watch the video)
    • You will name and identify the number of levels for the one within/repeated IV.
    • Ensure that you move the within variable levels from the left window into the Within-Subjects Variables box in the correct order for the levels for the one within IV. SPSS will run even if you do this step incorrectly, but your output will all be wrong.
    • The between variable goes in the Between-Subjects Factor window.
    • Depending on the version of SPSS you are using some of the required boxes to check (i.e., descriptive and effect size) shown in the videos linked under content will be under different tabs than the video shows. For example, the Descriptive Statistics and Effect Size tables in some versions are under Options and in newer versions under EM Means. All the options are there, but SPSS moves them around a bit depending on the version.
    • Note: no follow up tests will be required, because we will only be dealing with 2 x 2 designs
  3. Copy the entire outputinto Microsoft Word.

Step 3: Excel Line Graph

  1. Using Microsoft Excel, create a line graph of the dependent variable means by level of independent variable. For the graph you are using the Interaction mean, and sd for the four groups (IVA levels by IVB levels) are in the Descriptive Statistics table in row with level names.
    • The description below the video showing how to graph explains where the data is at in your output that you will use to make the graph.
    • Y-axis starts at 0.
    • Title both the x & y-axis based on the scenario.
    • You should not have a title above the graph.
    • Include a legend.
    • You do not have to include error bars.
  2. Copy the line graph into Microsoft Word

Problem Set

A clinical researcher is interested if different type of therapy (individual vs group) reduces the number of cigarette packs smoked per month (before therapy vs after therapy) in young smokers diagnosed with major depression (N=30). Participants were recruited via a Facebook post looking for participants that had been diagnosed with major depression that were cigarette smokers and were willing to participate for seven months.

The clinical researcher randomly assigned half the participants (n=15) to attend group therapy once a week for six months. The other half of the participants (n=15) were assigned to attend individual therapy once a week for six months.

The clinical researcher asked all participants for the month before starting therapy to record for one month the number of cigarette packs smoked. The participants then reported the number of cigarette packs they smoked at the end of each month. The researcher used the reported number of cigarette packs smoked at the end of the first month before starting therapy and the number reported at the end of the seventh month after therapy.

The data below represents for each participant, their response at end of month one before starting therapy and response at end of month seven. The research question "What are the effects of type of therapy on the number of cigarette packs smoked per month before starting therapy and at the end of the six months of therapy in young adult smokers who have been diagnosed with major depression?"
