Hey Everyone,

For this weeks discussion post, we are discussing Ethiopia and their society.

1. Which individuals or groups in Ethiopian society are most vulnerable to scarcity.
   • Scarcity in Ethiopia impacts the everyday life of individuals and groups within the society. According to Hadush (2018), Individuals and families that are in poverty are most vulnerable to scarcity, especially if they live in a rural area. Additionally, women and young children are also impacted by scarcity.
2. What those most vulnerable to scarcity need most.
   • Those most vulnerable to scarcity need a reliable source of water, shelter, and food the most. In areas of Northern Ethiopia, there are many households that farm to survive. According to Hadush. (2018), many families have to take time away from labor in effort to find water, which is also a contributing factor to poverty if time has to be taken away from working in order to gather basic necessities.
3. Some of the ethical issues related to how and whether Ethiopian society can provide for those who are vulnerable to scarcity.
   • Ethiopian society can solve ethical issues and provide for those who are vulnerable to scarcity by inventing more even distribution of available resources.
4. At least two different reasons why Ethiopians who are most vulnerable to scarcity are in this situation.
   • Many people that live in poverty in Ethiopia depend on livestock and farming to earn a living and get by. According to Asresie, et al. (2015), earning a living off of farming and livestock in Ethiopia is difficult due to the lack of marketing resources available. It is difficult to sell something if there is low marketing or demand for a product. Additionally, there is a lack of development around technology and services that play an important role in the improvement of livestock and farming (Asresie, et al. 2015).
5. What the Ethiopian government can do to encourage economic development.
   • In order for many Ethiopian families to grow and develop the economy, they need access to basic resources. The Government can provide better access to fundamental essentials such as clean water and assistance programs.
6. What the Ethiopian government has done (or not done) that may have hindered economic development.
   • The Ethiopian government gave up the monopoly they had in farming that was running Ethiopia (Asresie, et al. 2015, p. 80).This allowed families to own and operate their own land and livestock. They have not provided adequate resources for a fair opportunity.

Finally, answer the following questions:

1. Could Ethiopia become a world-class producer and exporter of goods? If so, how?
   • Ethiopia could become a world-class producer and exporter of goods. In order for this to happen, they would need to develop access to clean water for everyone. Additionally, they would need to improve their regulations around livestock and farming development (Asresie, et al. 2015, p. 88). Finally, they would need to create a better market so their economy can grow.
2. Japan is a country relatively poor in natural resources, yet it is a global economic powerhouse. What are some of the cultural differences between Ethiopia and Japan that may have contributed to their economic differences?
   • According to Duke (2009), education is an important part of Japanese culture. A cultural difference between Ethiopia and Japan is the focus on education being important in Japan which plays a role in economic differences. Additionally, Japan is more diverse with their economy, whereas Ethiopia mainly focuses on agriculture.

Hi Everyone,

The group and people in Ethiopia that is most vulnerable to scarcity are smallholder farmers, the homeless, and the unemployed. They are the most vulnerable to famine because of the need for more resources, as they are one of the poorest countries in the world. This means they lack a lot of resources they need to survive in everyday life. Some ethical issues are having to depend on the government to help their country and having limited transportation to travel to get their needs.

Two reasons Ethiopians are most vulnerable to scarcity in their situations are the lack of good-paying jobs and climate change which plays a massive part in scarcity in that country. Programs can help boost education and train the citizens of Ethiopia to learn about business to help build more companies and more resources to help people. The government does not help its farmers with the resources they need for their crops. This hinders economic development along with poor underdeveloped transportation. No Ethiopia can not become a world-class producer because it will take too long to rebuild that country. Japanese people stick together and look out for one another, but Ethiopia differs. With Japan working together, it helps them thrive overall as a culture.
