The three alternatives to the court system are administrative agencies, arbitration, and mediation. The administrative agency that wrote a specific regulation generally initiates the proceeding, hears the case, and also decided the dispute. Ordinary courts are limited to preventing administrative agencies from exceeding their powers. Arbitration is typically faster, less complicated, more confidential, and less expensive than a lawsuit. Through arbitration, a third party or a panel of experts help the parties in a dispute solve their differences. An agreement to arbitrate is enforceable by the courts in many states. The third alternative is mediation, which is similar to arbitration, but a mediator only attempts to persuade the parties to agree on a settlement. The mediator cannot require a settlement.

I think I would prefer to use arbitration to resolve a dispute. It's less expensive and less complicated than a lawsuit, but it is still legally binding.

I think alternatives to the court system exist because not every dispute requires the same type of resolution. The court system can also be time-consuming and costly. A single dispute could take several months, or even years, to resolve. These alternatives are good ways to prevent the court system from becoming even more conjested.
