Student groups will work together to solve a case about strategic renewal arising from theories of sustainability and the circular economy. Each group will submit a written response to the case questions. Please note that you will need to purchase the case from Harvard Business School. The primary objective of the case is to introduce the concepts of sustainability and its operationalization in practice, The case makes use of a manufacturing firm in an emerging market, from one of the most polluting industries, cement manufacturing The case demonstrates: . The criticality of setting aggressive sustainability targets . The role of top management in setting a long-term sustainability strategy . Creating a culture of sustainability . Operationalizing the sustainability strategy on a day-to-day basis Prepare a case study analysis of no more than 1,000 words addressing the following questions: 1. How is Dalmia Cement trying to reduce emissions from different cement manufacturing sub-processes, and what are the challenges involved? How is Dalmia's culture helping them in this pursuit? 2. According to the case, Mahendra Singhi, the CEO of Dalmia Cement, believes in the social and economic sustainability of his business, in addition to environmental sustainability. What is the need for the former two sustainability aspects in the context of cement manufacturing? Don't you think he is unnecessarily diluting his focus from environmental sustainability by doing this? What are the pros and cons of this approach? 3. What aspects or concepts presented in the Circular Economy article, if any, could apply to Dalmia Cement's sustainability strategy? 4. What are your suggestions to Puneet and Singhi to reach the carbon negative goal by 2040? Which of the options presented in the case look promising, and why
