Astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) are in free-fall as they orbit the Earth, so their apparent weight is zero. While floating around weightless may appear exciting and fun, there can be significant negative health effects on astronauts who are in space for long periods of time. Muscles atrophy (including the heart), bone density decreases, and flattening of the eyeballs occurs along with changes to the retina. On Earth, gravity pulls downward on the blood and other fluids in the body. However, in orbit, the fluids redistribute themselves, which leads to more fluids in the upper half of the body and an increase in intercranial pressure. Perhaps one of the most surprising effects of long-term weightlessness is a change at the genetic level. In 2015-2016 former NASA astronaut Scott Kelly participated in a year-long "twins experiment" with his twin brother Mark. Scott spent a year onboard the ISS, while Mark remained on the ground. After returning to Earth, medical examination of the brothers showed that certain genes turn on and off in space. Telomeres, which form the end of chromosomes and slow down their deterioration, temporarily got longer in Scott while he was in space. If the human race is to survive and we are to travel from the Earth to other planets, we will need to live and work in space. One possible solution to the negative physiological effects of space travel is to simulate gravity, as discussed in Example 13.
