For this assignment we will assume that the convenience sample of students who answered the student survey are a representative sample of all Statistics students at Solano Community College. Select one of the following questions to analyze with a Goodness of Fit Test.

1. Are the students living in the cities proportional to the populations of those cities? In other words, are the proportions of Solano Statistics students living in Dixon, Fairfield, Suisun City, Vacaville, Vallejo, or other area equal to 4.5%, 26.0%, 6.7%, 22.0%, 27.9%, and 12.9% respectively?

2. Are there equal proportions of birthdays in each of the twelve months?

3. Are the seven colors of the rainbow favored equally?

Prompt:

1. Select the column containing the categorical variable needed to answer the question that you pick from 1 - 3 above. In Google sheets, sort your column to find the sample size (n) and the number of observations in each of the categories.Compose a table showing each category of your categorical variable, the observed number in each category from the sample data and the expected number that is computed based on the null hypothesis.
2. Show all the steps of the Chi-Square goodness of fit test: the null and alternate hypotheses, show the calculations to compute the test statistic, find the P-value (or the critical value), state the decision and explain why that is the correct decision (based either on the P-value or the critical value), and compose a conclusion in the context of the problem that you selected. In other words, explain what the results mean about the distribution of the categorical variable.
