Based on what you have seen in your own experience, and based on what you have read so far, how would YOU define a successful project? What do you think contributes to a project being unsuccessful? And, when you read about HUGE failures, do you believe they are, in fact, failures? Please provide examples and explain your answers.

In my opinion, a successful project is related to the project objectives you have set before doing the project. When all those objectives have been met then you can consider the project successful.

The common factors that contribute to a project being unsuccessful are:

1. A sudden change of project/organizational priorities.

2. A lack of persistence, an example of this is when the organization suddenly quits and stops doing what they are doing.

3. An unclear definition of risk and mishandling of a suitable solution.

Failure doesn't necessarily mean failure; failure isn't the endpoint of something. Based off personal experience I can say it can be the beginning of something much bigger, a domino effect towards the future and it may one day help grow something that you are building. Failure is proof that something was attempted. Failure is a valuable experience that teaches us a lot of things on the road to achieving our goals.

Many speculate that Mark Zuckerberg's recent push on the Metaverse is considered a huge tech failure. The initial uptake for the service has been dismal, with the average user base sitting at less than 200,000 - well short of internal Facebook projections of 500,000. A plausible factor in the failure of the project is that it came out at a bad time. With an economic recession looming, the idea of splashing cash on an interactive virtual reality doesn't seem justified (Finnerty, 2022).

Project management doesn't end when a project is launched, or a campaign has run its course. Successful projects are followed up on, analyzed, and evaluated so they can maintain their velocity and continue to benefit the company's bottom line. Failure is a subjective term, there are many factors that play into the definition of what failure is. One person's scope on failure may be drastically different than another person.
