Comparing from one period to another is not always the most effective way because the goals between the two period being compared may be different. It is however encouraged that the targets are SMART and the below are some of the information that may help to ensure effective project monitoring:

• Timeliness:This is making sure your project is done on timeand if it's not, tracking where it's off-target is important so you can always have an estimated completion date.
• Budget:Are you going to stay under the budget you've allocated, or is the project exceeding costs? so look at what your up-to date expenditures are etc
• Quality:How well has the project progressed? Are those working on it or benefiting from it satisfied? conduct regular quality checks and assess whether they are within spec or not.
• Effectiveness:Are you spending your time and money appropriately, or could you be managing the project more effectively?

the manager should ensure to collect information that is measurable in order to give a more quantitative uptate.
