1. How do discoveries of natural resources, such as oil reserves, affect a country's political institutions? This is an important question for students interested in international relations, public policies, and energy markets. Kevin Tsui uses a data set with 132 observations to answer this question using a few OLS regressions, reported below. The response variable in all regressions is the change in a country's political institutions, as measured by the Polity IV index - an index that ranges from 10 for an autocracy to 10 for a full democracy. The variable of interest among the explanatory variables is the amount of oil discovered in a country in the last decade, measured in 100 Giga barrels. Regression 1 is a single variable regression, looking only at the effect of oil discoveries on the change in Polity IV index. Regressions 2 and 3 are multi-variable regression, including additional information about a given country. Standard errors of the coefficients are shown in parentheses below each coefficient. Ignore the stars on the coefficients. OLS OLS OLS Variable (1) (2) (3) Oil Discovered -0.075 -0.106 -0.152 (per 100 Gb) (0.030)** (0.038)** (0.045)** OilxDemocracy 0.283 Before Discovery (0.089)** Democracy Before -0.781 0.823 Discovery (0.092)** (0.094)** In (Income 0.117 0.114 Before Discovery) (0.033)** (0.035)** In (Population 0.008 0.002 Before Discovery) (0.014) (0.017) Fraction Muslims -0.268 -0.217 (0.069)** (0.078)** Ethnic -0.147 -0.168 Fractionalisation (0.087)* (0.093)* British Legal Origin 0.020 0.036 (0.052) (0.052) Communist -0.216 -0.180 (0.057)** (0.063)** Independent 0.128 0.09 Before Discovery (0.055)** (0.059) (a) (2 points) Carefully interpret the coefficient on oil discovered in Regression 1. (b) (4 points) Calculate a 95% confidence interval for the coefficient on oil discovered in Regression 1. (c) (2 points) "British legal origin" is a categorical variable taking value 1 if the country's legal system is of British origin and 0 otherwise. Carefully interpret the coefficient on British legal origin in Regression 2.(d) (4 points) \"Communist" is a categorical variable taking value 1 if the country is communist and 0 otherwise. Using Regression 3, test whether, everything else equal, being a communist country reduces the improvement in a country's political institutions. Use 1% signicance level. (e) (4 points) Using Regression 3, write down the prediction of equation of the change in Polity IV index as a function of oil discoveries for a country which was not a democragy before the discovery. Assume the intercept of the regression (not reported in the table) is 0.93. Assume all other explanatory variables are zero. (1') (4 points) Using Regression 3, write down the prediction of equation of the change in Polity IV index as a function of oil discoveries for a country which was a democracy before the discovery. Assume the intercept of the regression is 0.93 and all other explanatory variables are zero. (g) (2 points) Draw the two prediction lines on the same graph with the amount of oil discovered in a country in the last decade on the horizontal axis. (h) (2 points) Some researchers claim that discoveries of oil reserves have a negative impact on a country's political institutions. What would be your conclusion in light of the regressions above
