Title: Evaluation of performance analysis of live VM migration technique in private cloud environment with low resources. 1. Area to analyze on: Compare and contrast on performance of live migration techniques in private cloud environment with low resources? Phase 1: Experiment design - Required hardware and software tools: - Virtualbox: It is a virtualization software which allows multiple operating systems to be installed on it while running them together on the same physical hardware. - Dev-stack: It is an open source with a series of extensible scripts used in deploying an Open-stack environment. - Superputty: It is a graphical user interface application which allows PUTTY ssh client to be opened in Tabs. PUTTY is an open-source terminal emulator but lacks a tabbed interface, therefore using Superputty will improve PUTTY installation. - Wireshark: It is a packet analyzer tool. It is used for capturing network traffic on the running network and collects data for analysis. - Solarwinds: It is a network performance tool used to monitor the VM host including CPU, memory utilization, number of configured running machines. - Requirement for creating a Virtual machine on Virtualbox: - Operating system for creating Virtual machine should be ubuntu server 18.04. Hardware resources should be as follows: - 1. Processor: Minimum 2 cores - 2. Memory: Minimum 8 GB - 3. Hard Drive: Minimum 10GB - Performance metrics - The following will be considered as performance metric of Live migration - Total migration time: Is the time taken to transfer a virtual machine at source to destination host without interfering with its availability. The unit to be considered for measurement is seconds. - Downtime: Is the time period when the VM stops from operating and its services are unavailable in the network. This will be measured by sending a ping request from source host to destination host. Therefore, an ICMP request will be sent to the virtual machine every 1 millisecond from external client. Downtime will be measured based on the number of ICMP requests which are not responded. - In addition, therefore, the independent variable is Openstack environment while dependent variable is total migration time and downtime. - Phase 3: Implement the experiment. - The following will be conducted: - 0 Implement live migration of VMs on different Openstack deployments running on different KVM hypervisors. - O Analyze the sequence of VM migration phases from source to destination host - O Determine the performance of the migration phases while manipulating the VM workloads - O Analyze the results established for VM migration while using the three techniques pre-copy, post copy and hybrid copy
