Provide a brief critical assessment of this manipulative experiment based on each of the topics covered in this lab
this study is 'flawed' in at least three ways, possibly more, your critical assessment should identify and explain three flaws.
You are not expected to 'redesign' the experiment so that it lacks the flaws.
Your critical assessment may be written as full sentences or as a point form list.
Voluntary survey for individuals who taking a particular nutritional supplement. Diet crazes and their associated products seem to come and go on an annual or even monthly basis. A previous survey completed by a colleague produced a list of 100 individuals who self-identified as currently using one particularly 'trendy' nutritional supplement as part of their daily diet. Since the researcher of this study was interested in assessing the outcomes for individuals using that supplement, they obtained the list of names from their colleague, prepared a follow up survey, and anonymously sent it to those same 100 individuals. The voluntary survey was distributed by email to all participants (using bcc, to maintain confidentiality/privacy), and consisted of a variety of questions focused on weight loss, other measurable indicators of health/fitness, ease of adoption, duration of adoption, planned continuance of use of the supplement, and on collecting anonymous personal information including age, sex, weight, height, and medical history.
Being a voluntary survey, the expected response rate is low, and that is precisely what occurred, only 8 participants respond. Furthermore, all 8 respondents were female, between the age of 18 and 25 and all had achieved significant weight loss which they primarily attributed to the nutritional supplement. Nevertheless, the researcher used these survey results and compared them to the results of previous surveys, distributed in a similar manner, to users of past 'trendy' supplements, concluding that this new supplement resulted in better weight loss outcomes (i.e. 100% of users lost weight!)
