What Makes a Good Online Discussion Response?

  • Don't just write "yep, I agree" or "that's a great point". Follow it up with why you agree.
  • Don't shy away from conflict or objections in your responses. Don't shy away advancing a contrarian view. Disagreements leads to very interesting discussions.
  • We want to hear your own perspective and what you are thinking. Share your original thoughts. I would like to see what else you think on the topic, not just repeating what was already said. Try to expand on the existing ideas. Take risks and push the envelope. Try out ideas, even those that you don't believe yet or you have not tested yet. We want to hear your hypothesis and assumptions.
  • I'm looking for significant contribution to the conversation that demonstrate how you are grappling with ideas and issues that are emerging to you in this class and why you think so and by giving examples.

  1. what are some the organizational challenges that the Scaled Agile Framework and other Agile scaling frameworks were designed to address?

Firstly, before we discuss the question for this week, I will make a definition of the Scaled Agile Framework. What is the Scaled Agile Framework? From the topic, the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) describes as "a set of organizational and workflow patterns for implementing agile practices at an enterprise scale," (Piikkila, 2022) also the framework could understand as "a body of knowledge that includes structured guidance on roles and responsibilities, how to plan and manage the work, and values to uphold." (Piikkila, 2022) In my understanding, the Scaled Agile Framework is a set that includes the project process, principles, and practices as well.

On the side advantages of SAFe, it is "particularly well-suited to complex projects that involve multiple large teams at the project, program, and portfolio levels." (Alexander, 2021) At the same time, the SAFe could "enable larger organizations to manage projects with a higher degree of agility, offering a way for stakeholders across multiple groups to get feedback faster." (Alexander, 2021) And the accelerated feedback loop could be a virtuous circle to increase the project quality and receive a high satisfaction in participation.

So, there are three common challenges for the Scaled Agile Framework and another Agile scaling framework might meet (Appelbaum, 2022):

  • Culture Shift: "The elements of a culture fit together as a mutually reinforcing system and combine to prevent any attempt to change it." (Appelbaum, 2022) Even though, when they get together to form a complementary system and combined to prevent any attempt to change it. However, "Scaling Agile demands that entire organizations think, act, and respond differently in every dimension," (Appelbaum, 2022) so "that shift requires time and intention, but most importantly, it requires commitment from the top." (Appelbaum, 2022)
  • Work management shift: "The culture shift required to scale Agile aligns the organization to the principles that people want to do their best work and maximize customer value." (Appelbaum, 2022) With established iteration windows and teams of people, time and resources become more fixed, while scope becomes more flexible, subject to constant learning and change.
  • Technology Shift: "Scaling Agile across the enterprise both requires and creates increased visibility, transparency, and information flow." (Appelbaum, 2022) For most organizations, this means evaluating and possibly adding or replacing technology solutions.
