Security Issues at Work
You have been interning in the IT department of an insurance company, and you have applied for a full-time job at the company. One morning, you come to work and are told to clean out your desk and that your internship is ended effective immediately and that you will not be considered for a full-time position. Your boss explained that the human resources director was checking your references when she located your profile on Facebook.com. She noted that you had made derogatory comments about certain company personnel and that you described your current work assignments as boring. Although this was not covered by the computer usage policy at your workplace, company management feels you are disgruntled.
a. Using the Internet, research employment laws in your state. Can you be fired for what you wrote on your Facebook page? Do you have any legal recourse against the company?
b. Would the company be more justified in firing you if you had been warned (in the companys computer usage policy) that the types of activities for which you were fired were not permitted? Would the company be in a better legal position had it included these infractions in its written policies?
